Since we had next no restrictions on what we could make, we figured, why not make a giant jellyfish that lights up?

Combined with a darkened space, ocean sounds and the gentle movement of the jellyfish’ head, we created an ethereal experience for everyone that visited our exhibit.

The process

We created the jellyfish head out of paper folded in accordance with Origami techniques, and filled it with LED strips to create the glow. We also added servo motors inside the head to simulate a light up-and-down movement of the head that would flow organically through the Origami.

The tentacles were created by layering folded paper and transparent fabric, lined with conductive tape to enable touch sensitivity. We also had LED strips running down the length of each tentacle.
